This should be fixed...

George Burdell Assuming that you mean that it should be "fixed" by the government, then the correct answer is No it shouldn't be fixed. Raising the minimum wage does 2 things - 1) It reduces hiring of low skilled employees as employers automate more jobs and 2) It increases the base rate of union employees, whose pay rates are usually tied to a multiple of the minimum wage rate. So you're actually hurting those low skilled, low wage earners that you're supposedly trying to help. And if you're trying to support a family of four on minimum wage, then you've probably made some pretty F'd up choices about your education, career path and perhaps whether to use that public defender wearing the neon bow tie. Minimum wage is meant for teenagers and people just starting in the industry. I know many restaurant owners and if you have any kind of work ethic, then you'll get a promotion and get a wage quickly. The problem is that most fast food workers have a poor work ethic. Ask an owner how many employees show up to work on time (or early) and bust their ass while they are on the job. If you want to make as much money as the CEO, then stay in school, get a college degree and maybe drop $100K+ on an MBA, then bust your ass working 12 to 18 hours a day for 30 years and you might have a shot at being the CEO of McDonalds. Or better yet, learn how to code, develop a really cool technology that the market craves, work 20 hour days for 2 or 3 years, taking home $0 and eating Ramen Noodles and tuna fish, build a viable business, get some VC funding and sell it after 7 years and pocket a few million. But if you're trying to get rich working fast food, then you, my friend, have made some bad life choices.

svincent84 I agree with the benefits, but from someone who has worked IT for a couple of police departments, the costs associated with this are enormous. It would take a lot of funding.

svincent84 Good post. I agree. Sugar coating everything we teach kids a lot of times just comes off to me like speaking down to them instead of challenging and teaching them.
